THE OLIVE TREES, BY FARMER ADRIAAN 🌿

“If you look after the trees, they’ll look after you.”

A simple message that somehow says so much about farming, the land, and life.

When my sister and I first watched this, our eyes filled with tears.

We weren’t present for the conversation Josh had filmed with him, but hearing our dad speak about the trees he has tended to for almost 20 years, felt incredibly special.

He is a self-taught farmer who has spent years learning to listen to the land. To understand the trees, and to care for them.

He has given us the opportunity to take something he started and make it our own.

@piquetberg_olive_oil has become one of the greatest gifts he could have given us ~ a space to be creative, to learn, to create community, and to work with such a special ingredient in the kitchen.

And for that, we are endlessly grateful.

With this video, we wanted to give you a little glimpse into where your olive oil comes from, and the farmer and land behind it in hopes to continue to close the gap between what you consume and where it comes from.

For the love of cheese & butter 🌿

It was very special heading up to Piket-bo-berg yesterday to finally experience Maria’s cheese & butter making workshop on @vergesigfarm.

We were greeted by the fresh morning air, took a walk to the cows and spoke all things cheese & butter.

Hard work = high reward. After much stirring and shaking, we were treated to a delicious lunch with creations by @creamofthecropbutter .

Grateful for cows, forward thinking farmer friends and this beautiful land.

Ouma 🌿

Ons is so dankbaar vir al die jare se lawwe laggies, oorvloedige liefde en kosbare herinneringe. Ouma het altyd met groot opgewondenheid na ons olyfolie-stories geluister en ons met elke nuwe idee aangespoor.

Haar lus vir die lewe het in alles deurgeskyn. ’n Mens hoef haar nooit twee keer gevra het om plaas toe te kom nie. Van die Kaap af het sy die hele pad alles met verwondering beskryf – die geel canolablomme, die koeie met hul kalfies, die dam se watervlak en die voëls wat oor die lande vlieg.

Mag daar altyd ’n tuin wees om in te vroetel, ’n braaibroodjie met ekstra pers uie op die vuur en ’n goue drankie binne bereik.

Ons gaan ons jolly Ouma met die rooi lippe, warm stywe drukkies en aansteeklike lewenslus ongelooflik baie mis.

Na 96 jare, mag Ouma saggies rus. 🤍

Imagine wandering through the streets of London and stumbling across an entire shop dedicated to extra virgin olive oil.

Handpicked 🌿

After the “skutters” (those clever little machines with finger-like arms) have worked their way through the trees, gently shaking the olives onto the nets below, the remaining fruit is carefully picked by hand.

This ensures we gather every last olive before heading to the press, making the most of each tree’s generous harvest.
